Green Mountain Getaway Fundraiser for MS: Burlington, VT 2014
BY Lisa Friedman
Green Mountain Getaway is a bicycling fundraiser event for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. This flagship event will take place this weekend, August 2nd and 3rd, 2014. The event begins at the University of Vermont campus in Burlington. Loops will fan out up to 100 miles from the starting point. The route options are:
Saturday: 50, 80 or 100 miles
Sunday: 45, 75 or 100 miles
The registration fee is $35 with a minimum fundraising pledge of $250. The fundraising goal for this event is $100,000 and the events page is already listing contributions of $54,100. I have personally helped to raise over $8,000 for MS through these events over the years and it is such a worthy cause. Click here to register or if you wish to donate.
I have bicycled several MS Society rides in the past and they are absolutely top notch events. They are run very professionally with many rest stops serving nutritious snacks, a full lunch, meticulous route markings and a sag wagon to assist cyclists with mechanical problems or to give a ride, if needed. I love seeing the throngs of people who come out to cheer on the cyclists – often waving flags with signs, banners and cheerleaders at main intersections.
My goal this year will be to complete my first ever double century. A century is 100 miles in a day which I have done 6 times in 8 years. A double century is cycling 200 miles in either one or two consecutive days. I am very excited about this challenge!
Here is a photo from the last century I completed which was on June 21st.
